Invasive plants: a serious problem, a temporary concern or an obsession?

Various experiences in the prevention, control, and eradication of invasive plants in the Garrotxa region (NE of Catalonia) are analyzed herein. These experiences can help us to better understand the dimensions of the problem, to properly analyze which types of management are more effective, and to finally establish the necessary criteria for addressing this issue. Invasive plants are not only a nature conservation problem, but also a sanitary and economic problem. This fact is evident in the specific programs developed in countries that have long been suffering the very serious effects of invasive plants. The prevention and immediate eradication of newly appearing invasive species, which represent the most efficient and economically viable methods of countering this problem, must be incorporated into any newly proposed strategies. To best address this problem, it is necessary to obtain information about the dangers posed by these plants, their mechanisms of dispersion, and the affects they have. On the other hand, one must also take into account the optimum control and eradication systems available. Due to the complexity of this problem, it thus becomes crucial not only to combat it with a well-defined strategy, but also to identify all of the components involved.
