The state of farmland birds in Catalonia and the specific case of Les Cinc Sènies

The Catalan Ornithological Institute promotes bird monitoring projects in Catalonia to determine the conservation status of bird populations and their habitats. A comparitive study of the first and second breeding bird atlases indicates that, in general, farmland species have experienced a reduction in breeding during the period 1983-2002. In fact, this downward trend is even more pronounced in the case of steppeland species. This contrasts with the positive trends found in other groups of species. Since the beginning of the Catalan Common Bird Survey (SOCC) in 2002, we have obtained more accurate data. Nevertheless, the overall trend in farmland birds remains negative. This worrying scenario is shared by the majority of European countries, particularly the western ones, and seems to be related to the Common Agriculture Policy, which has favoured agricultural production over any environmental concerns. In the case of the Cinc Sènies (Mataró) agricultural area, farmland bird populations have not diminished during the period 2002-2006, a pattern that might reflect both the absence of local urban projects and the use of similar agricultural practices.
