The open areas of the Barcelona Region

According to the principles of landscape ecology, territorial planning should be founded upon a system of functional, open areas. This approach must not be solely based on an assessment of the characteristics of these spaces. In fact, the perspective should be multidisciplinary, taking into account natural, economic and social factors. Within this context, the Diputació of Barcelona has set up a territorial (GIS-based) information system encompassing the network of open areas throughout the province of Barcelona (SITXELL). The focus of this project is on obtaining and analyzing information about non-urban areas. Its main goal is to support local governments in administering these areas (both natural and agricultural lands), such that the socioeconomic development of these territories can be made compatible with ongoing improvements to the use of natural lands. Importantly, it is a scalable application, able to assist both regional and local planning. Indeed, it has helped integrate the dual objectives of conservation and open space management for better overall land planning.
