Interesting flora and vegetation of the Gran Torrent of Abrera (Baix Llobregat, Catalonia)

The Gran Torrent of Abrera is a tributary of the Llobregat River. The torrent is 5 km long and flows through Abrera, in the Catalan Prelitoral Depression. Even though it is located in a markedly Mediterranean area and has suffered considerable human impact, the torrent constitutes a shelter for some Eurosiberian flora (Cardamine impatiens, Acer monspessulanum, etc.). These Eurosiberian species inhabit in the Gran Torrent because of the fresh and humid microclimatic conditions that are result of the west-east orientation and the enclosure within the valley. Moreover, some communities, such as the Carici-Salicetum or the oak wood Viburno-Quercetum, which vanished or are very degraded in nearby regions, still have a good state of conservation. However, this natural heritage is menaced because the torrent crosses an area of great industrial activity and rapid demographic growth. Our objectives are to reveal this singular flora and vegetation, and to underline its interest from the conservation viewpoint.
