Located in the NE of the Iberian Peninsula, El Maresme (Barcelona) has always been an interesting region from an ornithologic point of view. At the beginning of the 80s, a book about the birds of the region was edited followed, twenty years later, by an atlas related to the distribution of the different species of birds living in the region. During the process of assembling the work for this atlas, it was evident that an opportunity to establish the status of the several species of birds could be achieved and, at the same time, to define the most important areas where the birds in El Maresme were lodging. The status of Catalan bird species, as well as the areas with greater ornithological importance, were established though the IUCN (The World Conservation Union), as shown in Estrada et al., 2004. Studies going on for several years were necessary to obtain knowledge about the status and evolution of bird populations. Some projects, such as the Monitoring of Common Catalonian Birds (SOCC), showed their importance to obtain this kind of knowledge. Results from this project show a decrease of abundance of birds inhabiting area of agricultural fields due to changes that this type of land uses had suffered during the last decades. In contrast, abundance of birds of aquatic and forest ecosystems significantly increase.
