L'Atzavara, 14: 27-34

The Mediterranean biome not only has a high biologic richness, but also high landscape richness, because of a long-term interaction between man and the environment. Promoting conservation of Mediterranean ecosystems is crucial given the importance of this biotic heritage, especially if we consider the socioeconomic changes occurred during the last decades. Appropriate management strategies need as a base a good understanding of ecosystems and their functioning. Many aspects have been deeply studied, while others remain unclear. In particular, there are many gaps concerning the importance and consequences of uncommon events. The mentioned socioeconomic changes have resulted in lack of appropriate management of Mediterranean ecosystems, with negative consequences such as diversity loss, increase in the frequency and intensity of fires and, ultimately, landscape degradation.
