J. Camprodon. Biodiversitat i gestió forestal en pinedes, rouredes i fagedes de la muntanya mitjana catalana.
L'Atzavara, 14: 17-26

The most characteristic forests of the median mountain of Catalonia (between 900 and 1700 m of altitude) are constituted by oak, beech and Scotch pine. Firstly, this article describes the ecological features, the recent historic evolution and the socioeconomic relevance of these forests. Secondly, relationships between biological diversity and forest management within the context of the median mountain are highlight. To exemplify these ideas, we address existing studies on birds as a bioindicator group in various forest structures used for management: trees maturity and availability of cavities in beech woods, and reduction of trees density by means of cutting for regeneration of pine woods and conversion to pasturelands of oak woods. Finally, recommendations for forest management to improve conservation of biological diversity are given. These recommendations are based on existing studies about forests of the median mountain, and not only affect at the scales of landscape or forest management plans, but also at the scales of forest parcels or internal quality of the habitat.
